We have many members in associations throughout East London and Essex (England). The style of Karate-Do was founded in 1984 by Stephen Grayston, who, after many years of training in Kobayashi Shorinryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, and Wado-Ryu Karate felt that all the above systems lacked a western perspective and developed Shindo-Ryu Karate-Do mainly for himself. Within weeks others were requesting tuition and in 1988 the style was taught on a regular 'open' class basis. We are a traditional Karate organisation with no interest in Sport Karate.
Our organisation is non-profit making, yet professionally structured to ensure that high standards are maintained. Our rules and methods are different to many martial art organisations that has been a very controversial subject since our formation, but we believe in our way, and our many fine black belt masters and teachers serve to show that walking a different path has indeed been a success story for us.
Shindo-Ryu Karate-Do also believes in investment in teachers and students alike, as they are both important for the development of the art for the future. We try to nurture our students and believe every individual is important irrespective of their ability, gender, age, colour, size, etc.
Training in Shindo-Ryu Karate-Do could possibly change your life for the better, although, like many things in life - the hardest step is the first one...
